Are Iron Doors Energy Efficient?

Iron Doors are a long term investment that can benefit you in numerous ways. Much like cars, people are usually interested in why they should choose one product over another. One common question that is asked before purchasing an iron door is “Are they energy efficient?”. In short, the answer is yes. Although there is a price difference between wood and iron, the benefits of iron doors outweigh those of wood doors. One of these benefits is the energy efficiency of iron doors over wood doors. In this section we'll explain why iron doors are energy efficient.

Utilization Of Double Pane And Low E-Glass

Most iron doors usually come standard with a Low E-Glass or double pane. But what does that mean and how will it affect your energy bill? Using double pane glass or low e-glass are effective tactics in reducing the amount of heat coming into your home. Depending on how the glass is prepared before installation, you can minimize the heat coming through your door. If you are not familiar with either double pane or e-glass, let me give you a brief description of each.

Double Pane Glass

Double pane glass is two thin layers of glass glued together with a small air pocket of insulated gas. This air pocket is purposely incorporated between the glass to prevent condensation from occurring from within the house. This air pocket will also provide extra insulation. Once these two pieces of glass are glued, the adhesive makes the glass seem as though it’s  a single piece. When a double pane glass is incorporated, you will see a bit of a difference in energy bills. Double pane glass  can save you money on interior heat and cooling versus single pane glass. While single pane glass can be used for doors and windows, it is not as energy efficient due to its single panel glass and no insulation.

Low E-Glass

Using Low E-glass is another main option for energy saving. But what is low e-glass? Low E-glass is a small layer of metallic oxide that is added to the glass. This ensures that UV rays are not entering your home through any glass material. While there are those that agree that natural light is good, too much could be harmful if not controlled. Much like time can deteriorate many items, UV light can affect objects leaving them dull such as carpet, wood floors, furniture, etc. To help minimize the UV light, low e-glass was invented to limit the amount of UV light brought through your glass. The metallic oxide used in low e-glass is a material that is near invisible to allow for natural light to come through while keeping the harmful rays from affecting any interior possessions.

Polyurethane Insulation Within The Door

Much like the double pane glass as talked about earlier in this section, Iron Doors are filled with polyurethane insulation used to ensure that heat does not go through the door to the inside of the house. Without this insulating material, outside heat is much more likely to pass through the door and infiltrate the interior of the house. This would cause a comfortable living temperature to become difficult to maintain. Because of the thick use of polyurethane foam within the door, your door will consist of the foam material completely surrounded by iron to give you a genuine iron door with the energy saving elements that can help you save in the long run.

With the use of polyurethane insulation within the door and low e-glass or double pane glass, iron doors can become an investment that not only looks good but also a unit that can save you money in the long run.

How should you go about looking for an iron door that saves you energy? We recommend one of two methods. Either ask various manufacturers that produce iron doors about their energy efficiency information, or you can purchase a unit from us!
