Modern Iron Door Design: The Anatomy of a Wrought Iron Door

The entryway to your home is extremely valuable for several reasons. A luxury iron door sets a great first impression, increases the value of your home, and helps you to feel inspired each time you step inside. Not to mention, a high-quality door built with functionality in mind will keep you safe for years to come. You deserve more than a cookie cutter door – invest in a custom-built wrought iron door that brings you joy.    When it comes to your modern iron door design, it can be overwhelming to sort through the abundance  of choices. Let's take a closer look at the anatomy of a wrought iron door, so you can feel confident selecting the door of your dreams. Here are all of the parts of a wrought iron door.

Operable Glass Panels

At Exclusive Iron Doors, we offer both fixed and operable glass panels. An operable glass panel is securely hinged onto the interior side of a door, and can be opened or closed at any time.  Operable glass panels offer many benefits such as ease of ventilation and cleaning. They’re a great way to let in additional light or fresh air to your space. Additionally, they offer ultimate protection with the ability to speak to visitors without physically opening your door, and the ability to lock the glass panel when it is closed.

Window Latch

The window latch is operated from the interior of the home without the need for a key. Just like the windows in your home, the window latch is used to lock the operable glass panel on your iron door.  It makes it easy to open and close your operable glass while offering additional protection. When your operable glass panel is not open, you can shut the window latch to keep your space locked and secure.

Deadbolts

A deadbolt is a heavy-duty lock that extends from the edge of the door panel and into the door frame, securing the door panel in place. They are not included in all exterior doors and are considered an additional form of security – set apart from the handle and conventional lock assembly.   We offer a large variety of lock options so you can find a set that provides both the visual appearance and level of security you need. From traditional deadbolts to single-sided deadbolts, to bluetooth locks, we can help you find a locking mechanism that works with your routine and lifestyle needs.

Flush Bolts

Flush bolts are used in a set of double doors to secure the inactive leaf so that the active door can lock into it. There are typically two bolts, one installed at the top of the door, the other installed at the bottom.  When flipped into a locking position, the strike of the top bolt is secured into the frame head while the strike of the bottom bolt is secured into the floor or the threshold.  A door strike is the metal plate installed into a door frame which catches the latch or bolt that locks the door in place. Strike plates add strength to the door frame which helps to prevent forced entry.

Barrel Hinges

Barrel hinges allow the door to swing open and closed and are designed to withstand heavy use. Standard-sized doors have three hinges, but the number of barrel hinges will vary depending on the size of the door. The finish of the hinges typically matches that of the door or lockset for a cohesive and intentional final look.

Threshold

The purpose of a threshold is to close the gap between the bottom of the wrought iron door and the ground or floor beneath it.  When paired with weatherstripping, the threshold seals the opening of the door, protecting the inside of your home from rain, snow, debris, and outside temperatures.

T-Astragal

Not only does a T-astragal make your iron doors look more complete, but it ensures optimal security and insulation. An astragal is a vertical piece of hardware placed between a pair of double doors that is fitted with weather-proofing material. It functions as a way to seal the gap between the doors when they are closed, preventing wind and water from entering the house and keeping the door structurally sound.  Astragals are directly fastened to the door itself, as opposed to the door frame. A mullion or mull, on the other hand, is attached to the door frame so the door stops against it.

Insulation

High-quality wrought iron doors are excellent at keeping your home comfortable when the temperatures outside are fluctuating. Polyurethane filling is a preferred form of insulation because it helps to reduce any drafts around entry points, offers improved comfort, and helps to reduce energy bills. We even offer advanced thermal insulation for areas with extreme weather conditions. In addition to the door filling, other aspects of your wrought iron door can help to keep your home insulated. This includes materials like a deadbolt, weatherstripping, a draft guard, and a custom fit astragal and threshold. We pay great attention to every detail to ensure that your door is energy efficient, highly secure, and visually stunning.
